‘They’ do say that fashion repeats itself, and the same can be said for interior design trends…
With shows like The Great British Bake Off becoming so popular in the UK, 50’s kitchen decor has seen a huge revival in the public buying wonderfully vintage pieces for their kitchens. 50’s baby pink and duck egg blue, polka dots and kitsch striped accessories are lining the shelves of everywhere from John Lewis to Poundland.
The 50’s might not be quite to your taste, perhaps you prefer the brown-overload that happened in the 70’s, or perhaps all things tacky and 90’s? If clashing retro prints are your thing then take inspiration from the 60’s!
Updating your kitchen isn’t as hard as you may think, a few well placed trinkets can do the job without you having to start from scratch. Flea markets, car boot sales, eBay and Etsy are all treasure troves waiting to be explored!
Fabulous 50’s Kitchen Decor
50’s was a time where the austerity of the war started lifting and people had a little more money for nicer things. The kitchen was very much a functional place still and women still dominated the domain, but with the invention of new technology and new found income, people starting buying appliances, gadgets and items to improve the efficiency and comfort of the kitchen.
Proper china was still order of the day over making a cuppa in a mug and picking up vintage tea sets is fairly easy. Vintage decor has seen such a revival in the past year or so that many high street shops offer 50’s style homewear, so there really is never an easier time to recreate the 50s!

Block colours, psychedelic patterns on fabrics, worktops, walls… everything, and a colour palette of oranges, browns and turquoise all make for a 60’s vibe.
Groovy 70’s Kitchen Decor
The 60’s and 70’s had very similar style, olive green, brown and burnt orange was a colour palette the seems to have stuck –

All of the neon.
And, practicality…. by this decade, most of the family were out of the house all day, there was no one at home to spend all day cooking and cleaning like in the 50’s. With this in mind, kitchens needed to be convenient and easy to look after. Microwaves were now common, and ready meals started being introduced. New novelty gadgets and junk food became more and more of an everyday feature.
