Internal Door Pairs

Door pairs are made of a set of two doors that are made to fit and operate together. Each door in the door pair is usually the size of a standard door, meaning they can be used for wide doorways to encourage an open plan feel. They make great room dividers as each door can be used separately, either as a typical single door or as a pair.

The Express Doors Direct Internal Door Pairs Range

Although door pairs are similar to internal French doors, there are some differences. Each individual French door in a pair tends to be narrower than a standard-sized internal door and they are generally operated together as double doors, unlike door pairs. What's more, French doors tend to come as a set, with frames and potentially sidelights. Door pairs, on the other hand, can be bought independently which is handy if you're fitting them to an existing door frame.

How do Double Door Pairs Work?

Door pairs can work in two different ways. Here are the options for how they open:

  • Two doors next to each other that meet in the middle with a handle to keep them closed. These will open either way.
  • Two doors created as a rebated pair. When meeting, they stop due to a small lip on either door, making them more secure. These will only open one way.

Rebated Door Pairs

Our range of internal door pairs includes rebated door pairs. Rebated door pairs are a set of doors that have a small section removed from the edge of the door where the pair meets. The small sections which have been removed are complementary on each door, like a yin and yang, allowing the doors to slot together when shut. This means the doors slightly overlap, so there isn't a thin gap between them like on typical double door sets.

A rebated door pair also tends to be thicker than a normal door set to allow for the lip. The interlocking mechanism and increased thickness makes a rebated door pair particularly good for security, insulation and preventing any draughts. Having a thicker door also allows your rebated door pair to sit flush with the door frame and walls when closed. This can create a sleek and attractive finish for your home which can be harder to achieve without a rebated door pair.

Making a Rebated Door Pair With Pairmakers

For internal doors which aren't manufactured rebated, we offer internal pairmakers. These are pieces of timber that can transform a typical door pair into a rebated door pair. Pairmakers are 'T' shaped accessories, with the vertical section slotting between the doors to fill the gap. One side of the horizontal part of the pairmaker is fixed to one door, allowing the other door to slot into the other side. This emulates the interlocking mechanism on a rebated door pair which improves insulation and security.

Styles

We are proud to offer a wide variety of double door pairs. No matter what style of door you are looking for, we are sure to have a double door pair to suit your interior design. Some options to consider include:

Glazing

We offer door pairs that are glazed or unglazed. A glazed door pair will offer improved light flow throughout your rooms, brightening your home and creating an open plan feel. We offer doors with clear glass for optimal light flow and frosted glass for greater privacy between spaces.

Our unglazed door pairs are made up of timber doors with no glass. Unglazed doors will offer increased privacy, soundproofing and insulation when compared to their glazed counterparts.

Finish

We have door pairs in all levels of finish to ensure there's something for all requirements. Fully finished, or 'prefinished' doors, have been finished by the manufacturer and are ready to hang immediately. Our white primed doors, or part-finished doors, have been primed by the manufacturer and are ready to paint in whichever colour you desire. Lastly, our unfinished double doors have no finish applied to them at all, allowing you to stain, wax or paint them however you want! Unfinished doors tend to come at a lower price than other finishes too if that is a concern.

Design

Our stock includes a wide range of door designs to suit any interior. Our internal doors range from the classic look of solid oak wood doors to contemporary white doors. For a warm and timeless feel, we recommend our oak doors. Wooden doors have a quality feel to them which will add elegance to any room. If you want a modern look, we can recommend our white Shaker-style doors. The minimal look of Shaker doors is very popular and, with added glazing, these internal doors can really help to create a bright and open space.
