When shopping for internal doors, you may be surprised by the huge range of finishes. Some have a simple finish that showcases the natural beauty of the wood grain. Others come completely unfinished so that you can paint or stain them however you like.
Here we'll look at everything you need to know about primed internal doors. So you can choose the perfect internal doors for your interior aesthetic.
A primed door is a door that has been finished with a protective coat of primer paint. This creates a seal around the wood and prevents wear, tear and moisture ingress from damaging the wood. Although this limits your choice of finishes, it is an excellent choice if you intend to paint your doors rather than exposing the wood grain.
The most common colour of primed internal doors is white primed. However, while we carry many white internal doors, we also stock a range of high-quality grey and black primed interior doors in a variety of styles.
The internal doors market is built around giving you optimal choice. Some customers prefer to finish their own doors, while others want to buy doors that are ready to hang. Primed doors are the middle-ground, with some of the work already complete.
When you see the pristine finish of your primed white internal doors, you may wonder if they even need painting.
By and large, we recommend that you paint your primed doors. Primed white doors can pick up little scuffs and scrapes while in transit. Even if they arrive at your home unscathed, the prime is less resilient than a coat of paint and could become damaged during day-to-day use.
Factory-primed doors are generally much harder wearing than hand-primed doors. As such, there are many who hang their primed internal doors for years without ever applying a coat of paint. Generally speaking, however, we recommend painting over your primed internal doors to ensure that you get the most out of them, both in terms of aesthetics and durability!
Buying primed white internal doors makes the painting process much quicker and easier. A primer coat is the foundation on which your paint job is built. It fills in porous surfaces, blocks stains and helps the paint stick to the door properly. Buying primed white doors saves you the time and effort of priming your door by hand.
You should always paint your internal doors before hanging them or applying hardware like handles, levers or locks. It's probably best to do this outside to avoid unwanted paint getting on your flooring, walls or upholstery.
Many prefer to lightly sand their pre-primed doors prior to painting in order to ensure a uniformly smooth finish. In the unlikely event that the prime coat is damaged, you should sand down the damaged area and re-prime by hand. Adding an undercoat may seem like overkill for a primed door. However, we find that it's a great way to ensure a perfectly smooth finish.
Once the undercoat is dried, you can apply your topcoat. We recommend applying two coats in your chosen colour for a perfect finish. Be sure to leave enough time between coats. We also recommend lightly sanding between coats to remove any tiny air bubbles that could undermine the finish.
Once both coats have been given time to dry, you can add your hardware and hang your primed internal doors in place.
Our primed doors come in a range of colours and styles. Whatever the needs of your living space, we have a primed internal door to suit them. Let us guide you through the different types of primed internal door that you can expect to find in our range.
Primed white internal doors are the most common type that you'll find. Internal white doors lend themselves to a wider variety of topcoat colours. However, they work best with brighter colours to create a cheerier and more vibrant finish. Or simply add a white topcoat for internal white doors that lend a bright, breezy and spacious feel to your living space.
While less common than white primed doors, you'll still find grey primed interior doors in a fantastic range of styles. Grey primed doors are a good fit for topcoats that are richer and darker in colour. Grey is a good choice for ensuring colour accuracy in your topcoat and likely have to apply fewer coats to achieve the desired effect for your internal doors.
Black primed doors are less common than their white counterparts. But you can still find black doors in a diverse range of styles. Whether you're looking for a traditional or contemporary look, a black door may suit your needs.
Black primer is a good choice for cooler colours of topcoat such as blues, greens or deep purples.
Many of our interior door styles have a fantastic selection of glazed options. A glazed internal door is great for flooding the room with natural light and creating a breezy living space. We offer doors with clear glazing or frosted glass to better protect your privacy.
Our door range also includes a huge range of FD-30 rated fire doors. These engineered solid core interior doors are designed to keep fire and smoke at bay for at least 30 minutes, giving you ample time to get to safety.
We know that customisation is extremely important to our customers. You want to be able to match each door to your home aesthetic. A primed door is easier to paint in any colour you wish to provide a perfect match with your existing doors, windows, or even your flooring. It ensures more accurate colour matching whether you want a better fit with your interior design or a bold colour choice that makes a statement.
Because they arrive primed and ready to paint, it's quicker and easier for you to get the look you want.
